As more companies pay attention to the carbon footprint their employees' travel leaves behind, a diverse group of hotel
operators has announced a timely collaboration.
Hilton, Marriott and MGM Resorts and 20 other companies have agreed to adopt a uniform way to calculate their hotels' carbon footprint, the World Travel & Tourism Council announced today.
The initiative will give customers "more transparency and clarity," says WTTC CEO David Scowsill.
It comes at a time when Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and other groups are increasingly trying to monitor travel's environmental impact - and, in some cases, factor a hotel or hotel chain's "green" strategies into their booking decisions.
Currently, hotels use a variety of methods to calculate their carbon footprint, which makes it confusing for customers - be they Fortune 100 multinationals or government agencies. The inconsistencies also make it difficult for the hotel industry to achieve gains.
"We expect this industry common language to be widely used within the next two years," Scowsill says in a statement.
Other operators that have signed on to the methodology: Wyndham, Hyatt, Starwood, Accor, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Hong Kong & Shanghai Hotels, Jumeirah Group and Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
The WTTC and International Tourism Partnership helped broker the agreement.
The methodology announced today has been tested in hotels of different styles and size and locales and has been reviewed by the World Resources Institute.
