For consumers, this has resulted in confusion and at times, a lack of confidence when green washing claims are exposed. For industry, it represents lost business opportunity, as only those organisations willing to submit to scrutiny and transparency are being placed on the "preferred supplier" lists of large corporate and government entities.
EarthCheck has been designed to meet the needs of the tourism hotel sector. The program was developed by the Australian government-funded Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC).The program complies with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) 14064 range of standards for greenhouse gas accounting.
EarthCheck is exclusively owned by EC3 Global, and is used as the accreditation program by many of the top international hotels, such as the Intercontinental, Accor, Taj Hotels and the Langham Group.
EarthCheck has previously used to underpin brands such as Green Globe, through its wholly owned subsidiary Green Globe Asia Pacific, which still has an exclusive license to certify under the Green Globe brand.Today, the EarthCheck Program is a standalone product, independent of Green Globe, and is the largest environmental management system in use by the travel and tourism industry for the benchmarking and certification of their operational practices.
If you are serious about choosing a hotel which is working to improve its environmental standards, look for the EarthCheck logo or ask your hotel if is accredited with EarthCheck. The ECOHOTEL web directory is working together with EarthCheck to keep you informed of the latest hotels to achieve accreditation. Find more here...
